PAST, TODAY AND THE FUTURE OF FISHERIES COOPERATIVES IN TURKEY

The aim of this study is to make an analysis on the historical development process, past, today, economic, and social importance of the fisheries cooperative organizations that operates in the fisheries sector in Turkey. Fisheries cooperatives begun to organize under the leadership of Halk Bank (a Turkish Government Bank) and the first cooperative was established in 1943 in Istanbul. Because of the promotive supports given to the fisheries sector and cooperative system after the Cooperatives law (#1163) and Fisheries law (#1380); fishermen begun to organize under the roof of cooperatives and a rise in the number of cooperatives were detected. Nowadays, as of 2016, there are 552 unit fisheries cooperatives and 30.845 fishermen as cooperative society operating in Turkey under the organization of 16 regional union of cooperatives and an upper organization of a central union of cooperatives.
